Robert Dubourcq - Veteran Hotelier: One cannot discuss the birth of lage hotels on St. Maarten without mentioning Robert Dubourcq. His name is synonymous with the hospitality industry and for his role in the island's tourism development, veteran hotelier and now SHTA Executive Project Manager he was recently named St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association (SHTA) Person of the Year. His celebrated career set off when he first arrived on the island in 1966. He started as an ssistant manager at Little Bay Hotel (now called Divi Little Bay Beach Resort), one of the only three large hotels back then, and in the next 15 years he woked himself up as managing director. Ready for a new challenge he rendered his services to other hotels and left his mark on Belair Hotel, Caravanserai Resort and Great Bay Beach Hotel, making them into great destination they are today. His recipe for success? As a hotel manager you have to be a goold spokesperson, provide good leadership to your staff and be a peacemaker at the same time, according to Dubourcq. Dubourcq loved his work so much he started the first Hotel Association in 1970, which is now the SHTA. Although he retired three years ago, Dubourcq does anything but sitting still. Just recently he took up an interim position as SHTA's Executive Project Manager where he fervently advocates that "Tourism is everybody's business. Although he still believes St. Maarten has a lot of potential for attracting visitors, he would love to see a moratorium on development.
Robert, I like to say thank you for sharing with me so much of your experience. Daniela
